Depiction of Smaug

Smaug

Smaug is a powerful and fearsome dragon who serves as the main antagonist in J. R. R. Tolkien’s 1937 novel, The Hobbit. Described by Thorin as a most specially greedy, strong, and wicked worm, Smaug invaded the Dwarf kingdom of Erebor 171 years before the events of the story.

The dragon resides within the mountain, guarding the treasure he seized from the dwarves. His presence and hoard become the primary goal of a quest undertaken by thirteen dwarves, the wizard Gandalf, and the hobbit Bilbo Baggins, who seek to reclaim the lost kingdom.
