Pip

Philip Pirrip, known as Pip, is the protagonist and narrator of Charles Dickens’s 1861 novel Great Expectations. As one of the most popular characters in English literature, he recounts his life story from the perspective of many years after the events have taken place.

The narrative follows Pip’s journey from childhood innocence into adulthood. Throughout this process, his financial and social rise is accompanied by an emotional and moral deterioration, eventually forcing him to recognize his negative expectations through a newfound self-awareness.
