Marius Pontmercy

Marius Pontmercy is a young student and a protagonist in Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel Les Misérables. As the suitor of Cosette, a young woman raised by Jean Valjean, Marius becomes despondent when he believes he has lost her. Determined to die, he joins the revolutionary association known as the Friends of the ABC during the 1832 June Rebellion, though he is not an official member of the group.

During the fighting, Marius faces death but is ultimately saved by Jean Valjean. Following his rescue, he goes on to marry Cosette.
