The Hatter

The Hatter is a fictional character who appears in Lewis Carroll’s 1865 book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and its 1871 sequel, Through the Looking-Glass. Within the narrative of the first book, the Cheshire Cat describes both the Hatter and the March Hare as being mad.

Although the character is frequently called the Mad Hatter in popular culture and various adaptations, Lewis Carroll never used that specific term in his writing. The phrase mad as a hatter existed prior to the publication of Carroll’s works.
