John Wemmick is a character in Charles Dickens’s 1861 novel Great Expectations, where he serves as Mr. Jaggers’s clerk and a friend to the protagonist, Pip. Some scholars identify him as the most modern man within the story.

Wemmick is also recognized as one of Dickens’s most successful split characters. His persona is used to explore the relationship between public and private spheres, illustrating a divided existence.
