Jean Valjean

Jean Valjean is the protagonist of Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel Les Misérables. The story follows his struggle to lead a normal life and seek redemption following a 19-year prison sentence, which he originally received for stealing bread to feed his sister’s starving children and attempting to escape from custody.

Throughout the narrative, the character is also known by several aliases, including Monsieur Madeleine, Ultime Fauchelevent, Monsieur Leblanc, and Urbain Fabre.
