Friday is a central character in Daniel Defoe’s 1719 novel Robinson Crusoe and its sequel, The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe. He is named by Robinson Crusoe after the day of their first meeting, a time when the two were initially unable to communicate with one another.

The character has become a cultural touchstone, serving as the origin for the expression Man Friday. This term is used to describe a male personal assistant or servant, particularly one noted for being exceptionally loyal or competent.
