Fantine

Fantine is a young, beautiful, and naive grisette in Paris who appears in Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel Les Miserables. After being impregnated and subsequently abandoned by a wealthy student, she is left to raise their daughter, Cosette, entirely on her own.

Driven by the necessity of supporting her child, Fantine is forced by her circumstances to become a prostitute. This difficult life leads to the loss of both her beauty and her health, eventually resulting in her death from tuberculosis.
