D'Artagnan

D’Artagnan is a legendary character whose origins lie in the life of a real French soldier, Charles de Batz de Castelmore. The historical figure served Louis XIV as captain of the Musketeers of the Guard and ultimately died at the siege of Maastricht during the Franco-Dutch War.

While his life was first chronicled by Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras, the character is best known through the fictionalized d’Artagnan Romances by Alexandre Dumas, most notably The Three Musketeers. Today, this heavily fictionalized version of the man, featured in both literature and screen adaptations, has become far more widely recognized than the historical soldier upon whom he was based.
