Depiction of Cosette

Cosette

Cosette is a fictional character from Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel Les Misérables, appearing in the many stage, film, and television adaptations of the story. Born to an unmarried mother and deserted by her father, she is an orphaned child who is never given a surname by the author.

Although her birth name is Euphrasie, it is only mentioned briefly in the text. Throughout the course of the novel, she is also mistakenly identified by the names Ursule, Lark, and Mademoiselle Lanoire.
