Chingachgook
Chingachgook is a fictional Mohican chief who appears in four of James Fenimore Cooper’s five Leatherstocking Tales, most notably the 1826 novel The Last of the Mohicans. Throughout the series, he serves as a companion to the hero Natty Bumppo. In The Deerslayer, it is revealed that Chingachgook married Wah-ta-Wah and had a son named Uncas, though his wife died while still young.
His son, Uncas, was considered the last of the Mohicans at his birth, but he was eventually killed in a battle against the Huron warrior Magua. Having outlived his son, Chingachgook became the actual last of the Mohicans before dying as an old man in the 1823 novel The Pioneers.
