Baron Danglars

Baron Danglars is a primary antagonist in Alexandre Dumas’s 1844 adventure novel The Count of Monte Cristo, appearing alongside fellow villains Gérard de Villefort and Fernand de Morcerf. The story introduces him as the supercargo of the merchant ship Pharaon, where he works alongside the first mate, Edmond Dantès.

Driven by jealousy over Dantès’s promotion to captain, Danglars orchestrates his downfall by writing a letter that falsely accuses Dantès of Bonapartism. This act of betrayal leads directly to Dantès’s long imprisonment in the Château d’If.
