Mary Ann Evans, known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist, poet, journalist, and translator who became one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. Throughout her career, she authored seven novels: Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, Romola, Felix Holt, the Radical, Middlemarch, and Daniel Deronda.

Her work is celebrated for its realism, psychological insight, sense of place, and detailed depiction of the countryside. Her novel Middlemarch has received significant critical acclaim, described by Virginia Woolf as one of the few English novels written for grown-up people, and cited by Martin Amis and Julian Barnes as the greatest novel in the English language.
